A nurse practitioner has become a very popular role, but many times people don’t understand the differences between that and a doctor. Though there are some things that they share in common, there are also some major differences between the two career paths. Here we outline what those major differences are.
1. There is a vastly different level of training. Doctors must receive not only a degree, but must graduate from medical school. If they are practicing a specialization, that involves extra training in addition to the medical school completion. Nurse practitioners may expect to receive their training from nursing school or a university. Though they do require additional training above and beyond a registered nurse, they don’t have to complete nearly the same amount of educational requirements as a doctor.
2. Nurse practitioners often require supervision by a doctor. Though nurse practitioners may provide much of the same patient care as doctors, they usually must work under the supervision of a doctor in some capacity. Though they do provide additional benefits that other roles do not, nurse practitioners usually work under the supervision of a doctor most of the time.
3. A nurse practitioner may not handle all of the responsibilities that a doctor can. Though a nurse practitioner may handle much of the same responsibilities of patient care, it doesn’t usually mean everything. They are not qualified to handle surgical procedures, and are often not allowed to prescribe narcotics. To handle such responsibilities, they must turn to a doctor to handle these things.
4. Generally a doctor may have their own practice while a nurse practitioner is usually part of the staff. Though there are exceptions to the rule, a nurse practitioner doesn’t generally work through their own practice. Most of the time, a nurse practitioner is part of a physician’s staff. This may be true even within a private practice as it is unusual for a nurse practitioner to work alone.
5. There is a major difference in salary between the two jobs. A doctor earns far more money than a nurse practitioner. This is due in large part to the fact that a doctor requires more training and brings more experience and expertise to the table. Though a nurse practitioner is often a trusted part of the staff, they will rarely earn the same salary as a doctor.
Though there are similarities, there are also major differences between a doctor and a nurse practitioner. It’s clear to see this distinction and why the two roles often work hand in hand.
